Dogs are part of the family, and when everyone climbs into the car for a trip to the park it’s nice to be able to bring them along. But, is it safe for them to be riding in the car? We discuss what you should be doing to keep dogs and passengers in your car protected and safe while traveling below.

Keeping everyone safe during car travel is a top priority. To do that, your dog should be wearing a seat belt (or safety harness) just like other passengers to prevent injury in the case of an accident. Even crashes at low speeds could cause an unrestrained dog to fly forward and injure themselves on impact.
A safety harness can also ensure that your dog stays safely secured inside the vehicle. An open window or door can be tempting for a dog that likes to run. And, in the case of an accident, a restrained dog will be a big help to first responders who may need immediate access to the inside of your vehicle.
Visit your local animal supply store to find a safety harness that is appropriate for your dog. If you are confused about which option is best, ask an employee for help as it’s important that you have a good fit. Never secure your dog to your vehicle using their collar and a leash.

If you are going to bring your pet along for a trip, it’s important that you are considering their overall comfort just like you would do for a human companion. Bring plenty of water and a few snacks to munch on during stops and try and let them out of the vehicle to stretch their legs every few hours (or more if possible). It’s also important to consider the temperament of your dog. Some dogs don’t enjoy riding in the car and would be happier if left at home to rest.
